Japanese Bamboo by Yamamoto Baiitsu Bottom

Japanese Bamboo reflects the bird-and-flower painting tradition of Yamamoto Baiitsu, one of the most highly regarded Nanga (literati) painters of the Edo period, working from the Owari domain. Baiitsu combined ink wash with delicate colour washes and elegant, sinuous contours — a style so accomplished that two of his works have since been designated Important Cultural Properties in Japan. Bamboo, a recurring literati subject, is rendered here with characteristic precision and restraint.
