Large Overlapping Rectangles explores the expressive potential of the most austere of geometric forms. Vitor Costa layers rectangles of varying scale and opacity, creating a composition in which transparency and overlap become the primary subjects — where one form sits behind another, a new, unplanned colour emerges. The architectural precision of the placement is offset by the way the overlapping areas complicate any single reading of the work; the eye must negotiate layers rather than arrive at a single conclusion. In portrait format, the vertical stacking of forms creates an almost architectural sense of elevation.

Made as a canvas print in our Berlin studio using museum-grade archival inks, the cotton canvas gives these geometric planes a textural presence that flat media cannot. The woven surface adds warmth and depth to the colour fields — a canvas art print where materiality and composition reinforce each other.
